What Is UHMWPE Fiber?

UHMWPE fiber is a high-strength polyethylene fiber made from ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. Unlike ordinary polyethylene yarn, UHMWPE fibers have highly oriented molecular chains that allow the material to carry substantial tensile loads at a low weight.

UHMWPE filament is commonly produced through gel spinning and subsequent drawing. This process aligns the molecular chains and gives the fiber its high strength and stiffness.

UHMWPE yarn is used where ordinary textile fibers may not provide enough strength for the required weight. It is especially useful in products that need high tensile performance without the added weight of heavier reinforcement materials.

The right grade still matters. Two UHMWPE fiber products with the same denier may have different breaking strengths, moduli and creep behavior.

Is UHMWPE fiber the same as Dyneema?

UHMWPE fiber is a material category. Dyneema is a commercial brand of UHMWPE-based high-performance materials.
Different manufacturers offer different grades, so the technical specifications should be compared rather than assuming the products are identical.

What denier sizes are available?

SHENGHE offers UHMWPE yarns in specifications ranging from 10D - 3000D.

Can you customize the strength of UHMWPE filament yarn?

Yes. We can review different strength requirements and available grades. Please provide your target tenacity or minimum breaking load, along with the required denier. Actual achievable values need to be confirmed for the selected specification.

Is UHMWPE fiber waterproof?

UHMWPE fiber has very low moisture absorption and does not readily absorb water. That does not automatically make a fabric waterproof. Waterproof performance depends on the fabric construction, coating, membrane and seams.

Can UHMWPE fiber withstand high temperatures?

UHMWPE fiber has limited heat resistance compared with aramid and other high-temperature fibers.
It should not be selected for continuous high-temperature service based only on its melting point. Operating temperature, load and exposure time must be considered.

Can you supply UHMWPE fiber for ballistic applications?

Specialized UHMWPE fiber grades are used in ballistic composites.

Suitability for a particular protective application must be confirmed against the required material specification and finished-product testing. Ordinary industrial yarn should not be assumed to meet ballistic requirements.
